The Governors are responsible for the school on behalf of the Members of the Academy Trust.
The Abbey School governors are people from the school’s community who wish to make a positive contribution to children’s education. We are volunteers who attend meetings and work together to further The Abbey School’s development.
Together with the headteacher we set the future direction for The Abbey School and decide how the school’s budget should be spent.
The Governing body makes decisions collectively on matters such as setting strategic direction, school policies, ensuring accountability, the school’s development plan and monitoring and evaluating school performance.
The Headteacher provides an Induction Programme and an Induction Handbook to all new Governors prior to their first Full Governing Body meeting.

I was elected to the Governing Body as a Community Governor in September 2014.
I was appointed to my current position as Human Resources Director for Transport for London in June 2011, after serving 3 years as HR Director for London Underground. A transport industry professional for over 20 years, I report directly to the Commissioner for Transport for London, Peter Hendy, and I am a member of both the Rail & Underground and Surface Transport Executive Committees.
I am responsible for the successful delivery of the award winning People Strategy across the TfL businesses, including its organisational effectiveness and design, people development, employee engagement, reward and recognition, strategic resourcing as well as the HR shared service centre and HR business partner delivery model.
Prior to my current position, I worked as HR Director for Northern Rail, where I also spent a period out of HR as Area Operations Director.
After my degree, I joined British Rail as a Trainee Personnel Officer and have subsequently worked for Eastern Infrastructure Maintenance, Burger King and Eurostar. I am a Chartered HR professional, have an MA in Human Resource Management and have worked in both public and private sectors. In 2014, I was awarded HR Director of the Year at the HR Distinction Awards.
I was appointed as Headteacher in 2006 and have been in Senior Leadership for 21 years having held previous positions of Deputy Headteacher in Beaverwood (Bromley LEA) and Assistant Headteacher in Angley School in Cranbrook. I hold the NPQH qualification and the Diploma in Management Studies. I have held the position of Honorary Secretary of the Education Committee for the Royal Geographical Society and took part in the Education Study tour of Japan. This allowed me the opportunity to prepare Geographical materials for teaching the National Curriculum. I have been married to Andrew for 32 years and have one daughter who is a solicitor in a large law firm in London. I enjoy walking, gardening and renovating in my spare time. I am proud of the positive changes and improvements that have developed over the last ten years and want to provide the best possible opportunities and life choices for the young people of Faversham so that they can be ‘The best you can be’.
I have lived in Faversham for most of my life, attending local schools, and all my children have attended The Abbey School. I joined the Governing Body of the Abbey School as a parent governor in January 1999 and am now a community governor. I have been involved with Finance and Premises at the school ever since. I have had a varied working life which allows me to bring experience from the theatre, school premises work and my current job in the Department of Work and pensions to the School. Prior to Joining the governing body here I was a governor at two local Primary Schools. I also hold the Certificate in School Business Management from the National College for School Leadership.
I am proud to say that I have been a governor at the Abbey School for over 20 years. In this time I have seen it grow from an average school to a very good school. I am at present on the Resources sub-committee where I hold the position of vice-chair. I have been in retail all my working life up to my retirement 13 years ago. I worked for Tesco for 32 years and this has given me expertise in controlling budgets of large amounts of money, management skills, personnel and development of staff, disciplinary procedures and site management on a large scale. I am married and have two daughters and three grandchildren and enjoy spending time with my family. I also enjoy gardening and holidays.
I am the current chair and a long serving member of the Teaching and Learning committee and also SEN governor. I became a parent governor when my daughter was a pupil at the Abbey School, as I wanted to contribute to improving standards at the school and subsequently became a local authority governor. I worked in the community as a librarian for 14 years and thus have a good understanding of Faversham and the issues which influence our pupils. I am now supporting families as part of the Early Help team in Swale and have developed a wide knowledge of the support needs of local families. Many of our pupils need additional support to achieve their potential in education and in life and I take an informed interest in what the school can offer them. I see this school established at the heart of the community as the school of choice, providing an excellent education for the young people of Faversham.
As a retired teacher and local councillor I bring a lot to the role of Governor. I have taught in three local secondary schools; mixed, single sexed, selective and non selective. This has given me a wide range of knowledge and experience that I am able to utilise in my role on the teaching and learning committee, as well as my subject areas, History and Geography. In my role as Chair of school appeals’ panels for Kent County Council, I have to maintain an updated understanding of education today and be aware of the pace of change. This role also provides me with an insight into how other schools operate which is both interesting and useful. As a local councillor, I am used to making decisions and shaping policy that will affect large numbers of people in the communities I serve. In my role as Housing Portfolio holder, I have to ensure best value for money for the million pound budget to ensure it is spent fairly and efficiently. I feel that these skills and experiences can be transferred into my role as a school governor.
Originally from Worcestershire, I settled with my family near Faversham on return from a long period of assignment to various agricultural development programmes in Asia and Africa. I am an economist with an interest in natural resources and agricultural trade in the less developed world. Recently promoted to Deputy Director of the world renowned Natural Resources Institute (www.nri.org ), I help lead a large team of scientists and social scientists who endeavour to tackle some the issues faced by food security and the challenges of environmental change. I have three children, the last of which passed through the Abbey School last year. I believe strongly in inclusive education and equality of opportunity. I sit on the Teaching and Learning Committee and have Governor responsibility for monitoring and evaluation of teaching & learning including curriculum, Gifted & Talented, Technology and Art.
I am a trained health visitor and studied at Kings College Hospital in London and Brighton Polytechnic. I then did further studies at the University of Greenwich and I am now completing my PhD at Canterbury Christchurch University. I have worked with children and families as a health visitor in London and also with traveller and homeless families. I gained experience and knowledge of many cultures and lifestyles. I lived in the USA with my husband and two children for three years. I experienced different education, health and political systems and value greatly the public services here in the UK. I have visited Russia, France and New Zealand to study healthcare and early years systems. Our children have been educated in the State system in Kent and I have been a governor at my son’s school for over fifteen years. I joined the Abbey School at the start of this academic year. I am vice- chair of the Parochial Parish Council. I have worked as a manager in the NHS and had responsibility for child protection and practice development. I developed the first Sure Start programme in Kent and as director steered it through incorporation as a community mutual children’s centre which was the first of its kind in the UK. I did a presentation on the model at 10 Downing Street. I have been honoured with an MBE for services to children and families. I am interested in politics and have successfully campaigned to keep the local children’s Centre in Faversham open following a proposal from KCC to close the centre. I am committed to equality and helping children and families achieve their full potential.
My career in education has provided me with extensive opportunities to work with learners and learning organisations. As a teacher, deputy and headteacher I was part of the education of learners in the primary phase. As a local authority employee I worked with schools across the phases as well as strategically leading teams. My own learning was unusual in that I began my first degree at the age of 29 when my children were aged 3, 5 and 7. I believe that education is pivotal in providing learners with skills and achievements to make choices, but also should promote self belief and confidence. I joined the Governing Body of the Abbey School because I was impressed with the philosophy and ethos of the school and look forward to being part of its further development. I currently undertake a national role for an organisation that promotes and supports ensuring women's opportunities in education and the workplace are promoted. This group links with a parallel international organisation. I have four grandsons under the age of 6, so spending time with them keeps me grounded in the many ways that children learn as well as keeping my technology skills up to speed!
I grew up in Croydon, leaving school at 16 for an Electrical and Mechanical Engineering apprenticeship with British Rail. For the past 28 years I have led Management and Customer Service teams in a variety of locations across the railway network, in the pre-privatised days of British Rail and subsequently in the private contract management sector, as a service provider, whilst honing my commercial and budgetary skills having multimillion pound contracts with client Train Companies. I am married to Claire and our son Jack attends The Abbey School. I also have an elder son and 2 grandchildren who live in London. Since moving to Faversham in 1985 I have always taken a keen interest in the town and its history and traditions and also its future development. Although up until now other commitments have meant that taking a more active role has been a challenge. Now, and whilst this might sound like a cliché, I have reached a time in my life when I want to give something back to the community. I believe how we educate our children and young people is very important. Part of this education process is to prepare them to contribute positively to society in any way they can. I welcome the opportunity to be a Governor and play an active role influencing and supporting The Abbey School in achieving its goals to the benefit of the community.
I am married with three children; my eldest, Jordan, is in year 11 at neighbouring Queen Elizabeth’s School and my (fraternal) twins Louis and Amelia are currently in year 7 here at The Abbey School. I am the Marketing Director for a local company called Cairn Research Ltd., based at School Farm, Faversham. Cairn designs, manufactures and supports precision medical research equipment for the bioscience community all over the world. I am responsible for the company’s marketing vision and strategy with 20 years international marketing experience. As a new community governor at The Abbey school I look forward to contributing with my business skills and applying my previous experience as a governor (QEGS, Faversham 2005 – 2010).
Having graduated from UMIST I spent the first eight years within a consultancy and market research environment, travelling extensively to clients in both Western Europe and the United States. As my role grew at a PLC in London, I was given the opportunity to train new graduates into various elements of the business; finding this much more enjoyable than the "day job" I quickly looked at the opportunity to become a teacher. I have worked in The Abbey School now for the past seven years. Having taken the Graduate Teaching Programme within the school, and then held a variety of pastoral roles, I want to learn more about the workings of the school and how I can act as a Teacher Governor to support my colleagues and the school itself. Having completed my Masters in Education in 2013/14, this is a natural avenue for me to continue to learn and develop whilst helping the school continue to be successful. Outside of school I have a wonderful young family and enjoy spending time with my wife and two small boys.
