Summer School 2021

The Abbey School was delighted to be able to offer, and then successfully deliver, a Summer School to every student in Year 6 who had secured a place at our school as a Year 7 in September 2021.

During the week (26th July- 30th July), we offered a full range of fantastic enrichment for our students to get totally immersed in. Here are some examples of what was offered: a trip to Howletts Zoo, a dance workshop delivered by the Jasmin Vardimon dance company, a tour of Brogdale Farm and lots of sport (including a huge football tournament!).

We also provided an academic offer to support and catch up on missed learning. This included: Mathematics, English, Science and Business Studies. All of these sessions were planned and delivered by our own qualified teachers.

Finally, every student was given a clear introduction to our core principles and values here at The Abbey School. This was delivered alongside a supportive Wellbeing Journal and some exceptional Speech and Language sessions.

Testimonials

97% of children felt “excited” to join the school after attending Summer School

“My son is feeling so much more relaxed and happy about starting in September, he speaks only positive things about the week and the terrified boy from the first day is a distant memory!”

“Can’t wait to come back and get started, she had such a good time”

“Thanks to all who were involved. The children were well looked after and cared for. Fantastic to see so many staff available to help but also to just ‘be there’!

“All staff were enthusiastic and although my son struggled because of his own anxiety they all did their best to look out for him. Also, great communication, organisation and ability to get to know the children so quickly”

“I thought this summer School was very well planned and extremely organised. It definitely helped my son to feel more at ease with the transition to secondary. I think that the undivided attention these children received was fab as the week was all about them!”

Food and Refreshments

CARWe were extremely lucky to have been supported by some brilliant local businesses (Macknades, Tesco and Brogdale Farm) who offered to donate food and refreshments for our Summer School. This meant that we fed EVERY CHILD, EVERY DAY, ALL WEEK! What an accomplishment!

A gift for EVERY Child

GIFTEvery child that attended our Summer School was gifted their own copy of ‘You are a Champion’ by Marcus Rashford.

It was heart-warming to hear their surprise at receiving such an inspirational gift and to see them re-reading and quoting phrases from their copy in September.

Local Press

The week caused such a buzz that we even made it into the local press!
