Teacher Training

Initial Teacher Education

Would you like to make a significant, positive impact on the lives of your people?
Do you feel that you have the attributes to inspire, motivate and enlighten others?
Does the challenge of facilitating learning & progress amongst 11-18-year-olds seem an exciting prospect?

Then you should take advantage of one of The Abbey School's Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programmes!

School Direct & School Direct Salaried Training Routes

In conjunction with the Fulston Manor and Canterbury Christchurch University (CCCU), The Abbey School provides extensive opportunities for graduates who are dedicated to a future career in Teaching.

Both of these routes allow the trainee to spend a whole year in our school undertaking a gradually increasing teaching timetable, linked with a programme of observation and collaborative work alongside our highly experienced and caring staff.  These courses also allow trainees to become involved in the wider school life, engaging in typical professional activities outside of the curriculum such as high-quality staff training, school productions, sporting activities/fixtures, parents' evenings and clubs.

There is also an opportunity to complete a 4-week 'contrasting school' placement and a 1-week primary school placement when following these routes.

Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)

The Abbey School has an enviable track record of effectively working with CCCU, providing an outstanding experience for all of our trainees. Our extensive induction process and support mechanisms mean all of our ITE students get the best possible introduction to the teaching profession. This is mirrored in the testimonials provided below.

NQT Induction Year

Our established NQT induction year programme works in conjunction with the local authority training team, Kent Teach. The programme provides the necessary support required to develop an effective and successful practice at this crucial stage, providing training opportunities both within the school and through our strategic partners.

We also combine the induction year with existing CPD opportunities such as the Outstanding Teacher Programme (OTP), Improving Teacher Programme (ITP), Reflective Practice Programme and bespoke twilight training.
