Department Vision
Health and Social Care and Child Development are the perfect choices for any young person who is interested in working with people. The vision of the department is to enhance the student as a person through confidence building and a ‘can do’ attitude. We want students who take Health and Social Care/Child Development to become confident young people who make a positive contribution to society. Studying Health and Social Care/Child Development will equip students with the skills and knowledge to allow them to flourish and develop the necessary skills to do this.
The department strives to develop independent work skills, by providing opportunities for sixth form students to take part in work experience and workshops delivered outside of the classroom.
Child Development
Sets out to inspire students to consider a career in the early years sector, or other related sectors where knowledge of child development is relevant. We aim to give students an opportunity to acquire some of the knowledge and understanding identified by employers as the building blocks for future competence in the workplace.
Topics studied in Key Stage 4 are studied again in more rigorous detail in Key Stage 5. This allows students to build upon their prior knowledge to become resilient, independent and enquiring learners who are highly motivated to achieve their full potential. Students are encouraged to develop and use a range of skills including literacy, numeracy and ICT through various tasks and assignments, to prepare them for further study or employment in this sector. Specialist vocabulary is taught to extend students’ knowledge, understanding and link to careers.
Health and Social Care
Aims to give students in KS4 the opportunity to study how people grow and develop over the course of their lives, from infancy to old age, and the factors that may affect this. Students will learn about the different health and social care services and the importance of making sure that people who use these important services get the care they need and that its delivery maintains dignity, choice and independence.
In Key Stage 4, the student develops a range of key skills. They interpret data relating to a person’s health and design a plan that will enable them to improve the health and wellbeing of their study.
In Key Stage 5, the student will learn how to research and interpret data relating to current issues in health and social care. The topics from Key Stage 4 are also revisited in further detail but an introduction of key theories and legislation presents a bigger challenge to the more mature students.
Naturally, as part of the course, Health and Social Care students in both Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5 are encouraged to consider a range of moral and ethical dilemmas that may arise and are particularly pertinent within the health and social care field. Furthermore, they are actively encouraged to become independent learners and to fully immerse themselves in the specialist vocabulary - taught to extend students’ knowledge, understanding and to link to their future careers
